Hair Loss in Women: Recognising the Causes, Treating Them Properly
Diffuse shedding, a widening parting, hormonal phases: the most common causes of hair loss in women, and which treatment makes sense when.
Why is hair loss in women its own topic?
Women lose hair differently from men. Instead of receding temples and a bald crown, the loss usually shows as gradual thinning along the parting or as diffuse shedding across the whole head, while the hairline itself stays intact. That is exactly why explanations and solutions designed for men often fall short, and why finding the cause comes first for women.
The most common causes at a glance
The most widespread form is hormonal-hereditary thinning, which often accelerates around menopause but can begin much earlier. Added to this are triggers that can be treated: iron deficiency (especially with heavy periods), thyroid dysfunction, vitamin D or zinc deficits, pronounced stress, crash diets, and the phase after childbirth or after stopping hormonal contraception. Tight hairstyles and years of pull on the same spots also leave their mark along the hairline.
Why diagnostics come before any treatment
The same visible thinning can have five different causes, and each demands a different answer. An iron deficiency gets corrected, a thyroid belongs in internal medicine, a hormonal-hereditary course can be stabilised. Serious advice therefore starts with a history, a close look at scalp and hair pattern and, where indicated, lab values. Anyone selling you a treatment without those steps is selling you a bet.
Which treatments are options?
Once the cause is clear, graded building blocks do their work: PRP therapy and peptide mesotherapy strengthen weakened follicles and extend the growth phase, alongside correcting the blood values. A hair transplant for women makes sense in selected cases, for example with stable, locally limited thinning or to lower a high forehead, and demands particularly careful planning, because the work is done without shaving and the existing hair must be protected.
