Healing After a Hair Transplant: Week by Week
From the first night to the final result after 12 months: the complete healing timeline of a hair transplant, with care tips for every phase from Hair Rooms Frankfurt.
How long does healing take after a hair transplant?
The outer wound healing is largely complete after 7 to 10 days. The visible final result develops over 12 to 15 months. In between lie clearly defined phases you should know about in order to stay relaxed: in particular, the temporary shedding of the transplanted hairs in weeks 2 to 4 is normal and no cause for concern.
Days 0–3: The first days
Mild redness and a feeling of tightness are normal. Sleep with your head elevated, avoid alcohol and nicotine, and do not touch the recipient zone. On the second or third day, the first hair wash takes place following our instructions: with a special foam, without pressure.
Days 4–10: The crusting phase
Tiny crusts around each graft dry out and fall off by themselves. Do not scratch, do not pull them off: every crust removed prematurely can cost a graft. From day 7 to 10, most patients are visually presentable again.
Weeks 2–4: The “shock loss”
The transplanted hairs shed, as planned. The follicles remain anchored in the scalp and enter a resting phase. This stage unsettles almost every patient at some point; it is part of the process and says nothing about the final result.
Months 2–4: The calm before the growth
Little happens on the surface. From month 3, the first new hairs begin to sprout, fine and light at first, becoming stronger over time. Sport, sauna and swimming are permitted again from week 4.
Months 5–9: Visible densification
Now it becomes visible: from around month 6, roughly half of the final result has been reached. The new hairs gain thickness and pigment; the treated zone increasingly fills in.
Months 10–15: The final result
Density reaches its maximum and the hair structure normalises completely. At Hair Rooms, we document your progress with standardised photos at every check-up: in Frankfurt, not via chat from a distance.
When should you contact us?
In case of severe swelling after day 4, increasing redness, pus formation or fever: immediately. That is exactly what an accessible clinic is there for. When in doubt, one call too many is better than one too few.
