FUE or DHI? The Difference That Really Matters

FUE sapphire vs. DHI compared: procedure, pros and cons, costs, and which method suits whom, explained by the medical team at Hair Rooms Frankfurt.

What is the core difference between FUE and DHI?

Both methods extract hair follicles individually from the donor area. The difference lies in the placement: with the FUE sapphire method, the doctor first opens fine channels with a sapphire blade and then places the grafts. With DHI, there is no separate channel opening: each graft is implanted directly in a single step with the Choi Implanter Pen.

The strengths of the FUE sapphire method

  • Efficiency over large areas: up to 4,500 grafts are realistic in a single session.
  • Sapphire blades allow smaller, more precise channels than steel: faster healing, denser growth.
  • Cost advantage where high graft numbers are needed.

Ideal for advanced hair loss (Norwood 4–6), extensive crown thinning and whenever the maximum number of grafts per session counts.

The strengths of the DHI method

  • Maximum control over the angle, depth and direction of growth of every single hair.
  • Densification without shaving: existing hair stays in place, decisive for women and working professionals.
  • Grafts spend less time outside the body, a plus for the survival rate.

Ideal for hairline reconstruction, densification between existing hair and small to medium-sized zones.

Why the best answer is often “both”

At Hair Rooms, we regularly combine the methods within one treatment: DHI for the frontal hairline, where precision determines naturalness; FUE sapphire for the larger area, where efficiency and density count. The choice of method is not a matter of doctrine, but a medical tool applied zone by zone.
